"I dream of painting and then I paint my dream." Vincent Van Gogh
This weekend I was invited to open my mind and to celebrate Earth's bounty with the likes of Nefertiti, Demeter and Lugh. It was refreshing. The story of Greek goddess Demeter illustrates the tremendous capacity of a woman to love and nurture, within her own family and the world at large. Lugh instituted a harvest fair that featured martial arts and horse races. It was a triumph over the spirits of the Other World who had tried to keep the harvest for themselves.
Van Gogh didn't begin painting until his late 20's and most of his best-known works were produced during his final two years before he died at age 37. Despite a widespread tendency to cite his fragile mental health, Van Gogh's work had a far-reaching influence on 20th century art for its vivid colors and emotional impact. I choose the Van Gogh quote paired with these images of decorated cookies and Earth offerings because they embody my re-awakened creative spirit and gratitude for a bountiful season as we conjure up our hopes and dreams for the second half of 2010.
